  • “Members of a cohesive group feel warmth and comfort in the group and a sense of belongingness; they value the group and feel in turn that they are valued, accepted, and supported by other members.”

― Irvin D. Yalom, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy

Who’s a good group candidate

While group therapy is a great option for most people, it isn’t the right option for everyone. It’s not your next step if you are in an acute crisis that requires immediate physical, psychiatric, or medical intervention, or if you are having thoughts of harming yourself or others. Group therapy may also be inappropriate for individuals who are extremely antisocial or impulsive. Each potential group member is screened for appropriate fit before the start of each group. This consists of a free consultation, similar to consults prior to 1:1 therapy.

Types of Group Therapy

Once you decide you’re ready to try group therapy, the next step is to figure out your goals and what kind of group to look for. As you read through these broad categories of groups, keep in mind that some groups incorporate multiple approaches to meet the particular needs of their clients. Most groups are not rigidly defined by one psychological process.

1. Psychoeducational Groups

These groups focus on educating their members on the specific issues they’re struggling with and how to deal with them. They are leader-led with a specific agenda. They can be open-ended or have a predetermined start and end date.

2. Skills Development Groups

Skills development groups focus on specific life skills (like social skills) its members can learn for coping purposes. They are leader-led with a specific agenda. They can be open-ended or have a predetermined start and end date.

4. Support Groups

These groups bring together people who are going through or have gone through similar life experiences,6 like the loss of a loved one or a significant medical diagnosis. Group members share their personal stories and what works well for them. Sharing helps participants learn from one another’s experiences and apply lessons to their own lives. In these groups, members primarily support one another and reflect on their personal behavior surrounding the life event.

5. Interpersonal Process Groups (aka “Process Groups”)

In an interpersonal process group, participants share about themselves with one another and learn skills to apply outside of the group. These groups are a great way to hear multiple perspectives, receive encouragement from your peers, and learn how you relate to others in a safe and confidential space. You may learn new ways to cope with stress, deepen your self-awareness, and learn to communicate more effectively in your relationships.
